“I don’t want quality time,” Jerry [Seinfeld] says. “I want the garbage time. That’s what I like. You just see [my kids] in their room reading a comic book and you get to kind of watch that for a minute, or a bowl of Cheerios at 11 o’clock at night when they’re not even supposed to be up. The garbage, that’s what I love.”
Garbage time = doing activities without the slightest whiff of optimization/productivity with your favorites. Some of the best moments of my life have been spending garbage time with family, friends, and coworkers.
I didn't know how the hell to choose a picture for this one until I remembered that I have a video of the time my friends and I decided to spend the night attempting to play the Star Wars theme song on our recorders (WE PARTIED HARD IN COLLEGE). Spoiler alert: nothing sounds good on an instrument that cost $3.95. ULTIMATE GARBAGE TIME.
Thankfully, Garbage Time is still part of my life now that I'm a mature adult or whatever. Yesterday my cousin and I visited the toy store near our brunch spot and bought a weird ass satanic snail toy. Which I WILL be bringing to work tomorrow, to facilitate garbage time there as well.
